In the introduction, editor Simon Leather and contributor Allan Watt provide a cursory outline of sampling theory (those without a general understanding of sampling and statistics will probably need to consult a basic textbook). They stress the importance of understanding the fundamental biology of the insects in question to determine which methodologies will be appropriate, and make the distinction between a sampling technique ("the method used to collect information from a single sampling unit") and a sampling program ("the procedure for applying the sampling technique to obtain a sample and make and estimate"). Both these aspects of sampling are explored in the subsequent chapters dealing with particular parts of the forest ecosystem, such as the root zone and the canopy, or particular types of species, such as termites and parasitoids. Illustrations and sample data charts are used throughout. The chapter on sampling aquatic insects goes more in-depth than the others with its discussion of sampling error and the ethical considerations of sampling techniques, which might have been nice to address more fully in the book's introduction. Even so, the information on the sampling methodology alone is well worthwhile.
