Titre : Metabolic ecology: a scaling approach Type de document : livre Auteurs : Richard M. Sibly, Éditeur scientifique ; James H. Brown, Éditeur scientifique ; Astrid Kodric-Brown, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Oxford, UK : Wiley-Blackwell Année de publication : 2012 Importance : 375 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-470-67152-8 Prix : 74.40 EUR Note générale : This book is accompanied by a companion website: 'www.wiley.com/go/sibly/metabolicecology' Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Metabolism Ecology Résumé : Most of ecology is about metabolism: the ways that organisms use energy and materials. The energy requirements of individuals - their metabolic rates - vary predictably with their body size and temperature. Ecological interactions are exchanges of energy and materials between organisms and their environments. So metabolic rate affects ecological processes at all levels: individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems. Each chapter focuses on a different process, level of organization, or kind of organism. It lays a conceptual foundation and presents empirical examples. Together, the chapters provide an integrated framework that holds the promise for a unified theory of ecology.
The book is intended to be accessible to upper-level undergraduate, and graduate students, but also of interest to senior scientists. Its easy-to-read chapters and clear illustrations can be used in lecture and seminar courses. Together they make for an authoritative treatment that will inspire future generations to study metabolic ecology.En ligne : http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/book/10.1002/9781119968535 Metabolic ecology: a scaling approach [livre] / Richard M. Titre : Scaling biodiversity Type de document : livre Auteurs : D. Storch, Éditeur scientifique ; James H. Brown, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : New York : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2007 Collection : Ecological reviews Importance : 470 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-69937-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Biodiversity Résumé : We know that there are tens of millions of plant and animal species, but we do not know enough to be able to describe the patterns and processes that characterise the distribution of species in space, time and taxonomic groups. Given that in practical terms it is impossible to expect to be able to document biodiversity with any degree of completeness other approaches must be used. Scaling rules offer one possible framework, and this book offers a synthesis of the ways in which scaling theory can be applied to the analysis of biodiversity. Scaling Biodiversity presents new views on quantitative patterns of the biological diversity on earth and the processes responsible for them. Written by a team of leading experts in ecology who present their most recent and innovative views, readers will be provided with what is the state of art in current ecology and biodiversity science. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-226-49237-7 Note générale : ISBN-10 : 0-226-49237-0; Published in association with the International Biogeography Society and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (USA) Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Analysis Association Biogeography Résumé : Foundations of Biogeography provides facsimile reprints of seventy-two works that have proven fundamental to the development of the field. From classics by Georges-Louis LeClerc Compte de Buffon, Alexander von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin to equally seminal contributions by Ernst Mayr, Robert MacArthur, and E. O. Wilson, these papers and book excerpts not only reveal biogeography's historical roots but also trace its theoretical and empirical development. Selected and introduced by leading biogeographers, the articles cover a wide variety of taxonomic groups, habitat types, and geographic regions. Foundations of Biogeography will be an ideal introduction to the field for beginning students and an essential reference for established scholars of biogeography, ecology, and evolution.
