Titre : Climate change on mountains: reviving Humboldt's approach to science Type de document : livre Auteurs : Olivier Dangles, Auteur Mention d'édition : Corr. ed. Editeur : Cham, Switzerland : Springer Année de publication : 2023 Importance : 266 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-031-39530-7 Note générale : DOI:10.1007/978-3-031-39528-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Climate change Highlands Andean region Science Research History Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : The world is warming up rapidly and this change is most noticeable in mountains with already observable consequences on flora and fauna. This book presents concepts, methodologies and major achievements of recent research in climate change ecology in mountains by placing this research in a historical perspective, that of travelers and naturalists of the Romantic era, and first of all Alexander von Humboldt.
There is now a renewed interest, both in academia and beyond, in Humboldt, his writings and his view of nature. But how can we actually make use of his writings? How can we put his philosophy into practice? How can we still learn from past scientific figures and do a better science today?
In this book, the author presents how it is possible to succeed in modern science by returning to sources, by renewing the tradition of past polymaths such as Humboldt, and by having a fully humanistic approach in science. He illustrates his point based on his 15-year experience inthe study of the ecological effects of climate change in the tropical Andes, showing how he has incorporated approaches from other disciplines, from different branches of science, from history and the arts to achieve a more comprehensive view of his scientific field. Alongside hard data, discoveries by past naturalists build our understanding of the world but appealing to our emotions makes us want to understand it. In the author’s view this is a productive and enjoyable way of doing science that speaks to our humanity and also increases our knowledge about nature.En ligne : https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-39528-4 Climate change on mountains: reviving Humboldt's approach to science [livre] / Olivier Dangles, Auteur . - Corr. ed. . - Cham, Switzerland : Springer, 2023 . - 266 p.

Titre : Little bustard: ecology and conservation Type de document : livre Auteurs : Vincent Bretagnolle, Éditeur scientifique ; Juan Traba, Éditeur scientifique ; Manuel B. Morales, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Cham, Switzerland : Springer Année de publication : 2022 Collection : Wildlife research monographs num. 5 Importance : 313 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-030-84901-6 Note générale : p-ISSN : 2366-8733; DOI:10.1007/978-3-030-84902-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : This book is devoted to the Little Bustard, a medium sized Paleartic steppe bird whose distribution ranges from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Asia. At present, the European population is suffering a severe decline mainly due to agricultural intensification, although its status and concerns in non-European countries are relatively unknown. In spite of this dramatic situation, the Little Bustard is an interesting model species for topics as varied as phylogeny, life history evolution and demographic traits, sexual selection and lekking behavior, habitat selection, intra- and interspecific relationships, or interaction with farming and other anthropogenic disturbances. This book provides an updated, interdisciplinary, and worldwide review of the most recent information of this crucial species in the Palearctic steppe-bird community, from specific biological aspects and traits to research-focused management. Some of the most prominent scientists from different fields (systematics, breeding ecology, behavior, competence, predation, population dynamics, farming, conservation) update and synthesize the existing information on a singular, threatened and vulnerable species. However, many challenges remain regarding planning and policy, assessment of direct and indirect effects on wildlife, methodological approaches, technology development, and mitigation strategies and their effectiveness. The book comprises a selection of the best contributions presented at the 4th Conference on Wind energy and Wildlife impacts, held in Estoril, Portugal, 2017. The contents promote the international cooperation among researchers, developers, regulators and stakeholders that have contributed to building knowledge on this topic. Much of current ecology research and conservation addresses problems across landscapes and regions, focusing on spatial patterns and processes. This book is aimed at teaching fundamental concepts and focuses on learning-by-doing through the use of examples with the software R. It is intended to provide an entry-level, easily accessible foundation for students and practitioners interested in spatial ecology and conservation.
