Titre : Atlas of the millipedes (Diplopoda) of Britain and Ireland Type de document : livre Auteurs : Lee, P., Auteur Editeur : Sofia : Pensoft Année de publication : 2006 Collection : Faunistica; 59 Importance : 216 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-954-642-277-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Atlas Diplopoda Geographical distribution Great Britain Identification Ireland Résumé : This publication is the culmination of more than 30 years of data collection by over 500 naturalists throughout Britain and Ireland, especially those members of the British Myriapod and Isopod Group and its predecessor, the British Myriapod Group. From its outset the British Myriapod Survey established a system for the collection of ecological information alongside distribution records. This approach was unique to the Myriapod and Isopod Survey recording schemes and only now is its value being recognised by other invertebrate recording schemes. It has enabled the production of an atlas based on more than 47 000 records that is so much more than a simple collection of distribution maps for the 62 species of millipede found in Britain. Analysis of the ecological data provided for almost 80% of the species records provides an insight into the habitat preferences of this important but undervalued group of animals. The results should be of interest to a much wider audience than the committed myriapodologists. The inclusion of colour photographs within this publication also marks a new departure for the BRC series of atlases. It may be somewhat surprising that a work on millipedes is the first to show this innovation. In contrast to birds, butterflies or beetles, millipedes are not often pictured in books and to the general naturalist or layman the reasons are self evident. However, the fascinating body forms and ornamentation and the often attractive colour patterns exhibited by the species illustrated in this book should finally discredit such misconceptions; millipedes can be beautiful! ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-954-642-269-9 Note générale : ISBN-10 : 954-642-269-X Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Eurasia Geographical distribution Identification Reptiles Taxonomy Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : This richly illustrated book presents up-to-date information on all the species and subspecies of turtles (7 species), lizards (112 species) and snakes (74 species) inhabiting the region of North Eurasia, which, in accordance with a decision of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) of June 2003, comprises the territory of the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. An attempt is made here to reflect the results of new taxonomic and phylogenetic revisions relating to the herpetological fauna of this region, but not previously published in Russian-language monographs. Detailed information on geographical distribution, with schematic maps, data on type localities and conservation status (IUCN and regional Red Lists, CITES, Bern Convention), are included in each account. The book can be used as an illustrated reference work on the reptiles of North Eurasia, while the data provided could serve as a basis for the Global Reptile Assessment (GRA). More than 400 colour illustrations are included in the book(photographs of reptiles and habitats, and maps). The book is addressed to herpetologists and conservationists, both academics and students, and all reptile lovers. Editeur : Sofia : Pensoft Année de publication : 2004 Collection : Pensoft series Faunistica; 38 Importance : 380 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-954-642-207-1 Note générale : ISBN-10 : 954-642-207-X Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Aves Avifauna Azerbaijan Geographical distribution Ornithology Species conservation Résumé : Azerbaijan, a country with a rich variety of habitats and wildlife, lies south of the Caucasus Mountains on the western seaboard of the Caspian and shares a common border with Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran and Turkey. This first full description of its birdlife includes an introduction to the geography of Azerbaijan, a history of bird studies in the country, an analysis of the avifauna, discussion of conservation issues, 372 species accounts, detailed distribution maps, an annotated bird list, as well as sections on Important Bird Areas, colonial birds, waterfowl, and the influence of cold winters and oil pollution. The reference list is the most comprehensive yet compiled on the country's birds. Birds of Azerbaijan will be a most valuable addition to zoological libraries, and many professional ornithologists, students of ornithology, nature conservationists and specialists in biogeography will learn much from its pages. It will similarly appeal to birdwatchers wanting to find out about a relatively unexplored part of the western Palearctic and to all those with a keen interest in natural history.
