Ecological engineering for pest management: advances in habitat manipulation for arthropods / Geoff M. Gurr (2004)
Titre : Ecological engineering for pest management: advances in habitat manipulation for arthropods Type de document : livre Auteurs : Geoff M. Gurr, Éditeur scientifique ; Steve D. Wratten, Éditeur scientifique ; Miguel A. Altieri, Éditeur scientifique ; David Pimentel, Préfacier, etc. Editeur : Ithaca : Comstock Année de publication : 2004 Importance : 232 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-8014-4342-8 Note générale : ISBN-10 : 0-8014-4342-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Applied Ecology Arthropoda Engineering Habitat selection Pest control Résumé : Ecological engineering is the process of manipulating farm habitats, making them less favourable for pests and more attractive to beneficial insects. Though they have received far less research attention and funding, ecological approaches may be safer and more sustainable than their controversial cousin, genetic engineering. This book brings together contributions from international workers leading the fast moving field of habitat manipulation, reviewing the field and paving the way towards the development and application of new pest management approaches. Chapters explore the frontiers of ecological engineering methods including molecular approaches, high tech marking and remote sensing. They also review the theoretical aspects of this field and how ecological engineering may interact with genetic engineering. The technologies presented offer opportunities to reduce crop losses to insects while reducing the use of pesticides and providing potentially valuable habitat for wildlife conservation. Titre : Biological invasions: economic and environmental costs of alien plant, animal and microbe species Type de document : livre Auteurs : David Pimentel, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Boca Raton, Florida : CRC Press Année de publication : 2002 Importance : 369 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-8493-0836-9 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 28/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Australia Biological invasions Brazil British Isles Economic aspects Environmental aspects India South Africa USA Résumé : Biological Invasions assembles detailed information on components of the invasive-species problem from six continents. This volume reconfirms the diverse and unpredictable roles that non-native species assume as they invade new ecosystems: destruction of vital crops and forests, major damages to ecosystems leading to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and water loss. In addition, it covers the impact of disease organisms on human health and livestock. Information is provided on how the non-native species invade new ecosystems and the subsequent environmental effects of these invading species. Wherever possible, estimates on the economic impacts of the invading species are included.
