Arthropods of tropical forests: spatio-temporal dynamics and resource use in the canopy / Basset, Y.(Ed.) (2003)
Titre : Arthropods of tropical forests: spatio-temporal dynamics and resource use in the canopy Type de document : livre Auteurs : Basset, Y.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Novotny, V.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Miller, S.E.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Kitching, R.L.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 01 éd. Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2003 Importance : 474 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-82000-4 Note générale : 2 ex. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Arthropoda Canopy Ecology Tropical forests Résumé : Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This book, written by 79 authors contributing to 35 chapters, aims to provide an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The book focusses on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. Topics covered include the distribution of arthropods along vertical gradients and the relationship between the soil/litter habitat and the forest canopy. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance. This important book is a valuable addition to the literature used by community ecologists, conservation biologists entomologists, botanists and forestry experts. Modeled on the highly successful Foundations of Ecology, this book consists of facsimiles of papers chosen by world experts in tropical biology as the "classics" in the field. The papers are organized into sections on related topics, each introduced with a discussion of their role in triggering subsequent research. Topics covered include ecological and evolutionary perspectives on the origins of tropical diversity plant-animal interactions patterns of species diversity and distribution of arthropods, vertebrates, and plants forest dynamics and ecosystem ecology conservation biology and tropical forest management. This book makes essential works in the development of tropical biology available in a convenient form to both senior scholars interested in the roots of their discipline and to students encountering the field for the first time, as well as to everyone concerned with tropical conservation.
