Land-use and land-cover change: local processes and global impacts / Lambin, E.F.(Ed.) ; Geist, H.J.(Ed.) (2006)
Titre : Land-use and land-cover change: local processes and global impacts Type de document : livre Auteurs : Lambin, E.F.(Ed.) ; Geist, H.J.(Ed.) Editeur : Berlin : Springer Année de publication : 2006 Collection : Global Change - The IGBP Series Importance : 222 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-540-32201-6 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 27/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Global change Land cover Land use Terrestrial ecosystems Résumé : The book presents recent estimates of the rates in changes of major land classes such as forest, cropland and pasture. Among the causative mechanisms behind land change, synergetic factor combinations are found to be more common than single key factor explanations. Aggregated globally, multiple impacts of local land changes are shown to significantly affect central aspects of Earth System functioning. Innovative developments and applications in the fields of modeling and scenario construction are presented. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the most pressing implications for the design of appropriate intervention policies, and on new directions and frontiers of research. The edited book synthesizes research achievements by dozens of scientists related to the Land-Use/Cover Change (LUCC) project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). It summarizes relevant findings on global land-use change which arose from value-adding activities of the LUCC project, starting in 1995 and extending until its termination in October 2005. The main intention is to describe how human modification of land cover became a major driving force of Earth System changes over the past 300 years, a period of most rapid transformations, with fundamental implications for current landscape configurations. In writing this book, current knowledge and understanding is reported on the rates, causes/pathways, impacts, future scenarios/models, policy implications and new research directions in the field of land-use/cover change. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-87590-418-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Case studies Decision making Environmental degradation Land use Résumé : [Extrait éditeur] : Land use is at the center of one of the most vexing challenges for the coming decades: to provide enough food, fiber and shelter for the world's population; raise the standard of living for the billion people currently below the poverty line; and sustain the world's ecosystems for use by humans and other species (--from the Preface). What are the intended and unintended consequences of land use change, from cropland expansion to urban growth, and more? How does an integrated understanding of the land and our use of it advance the science we need to lead the lives we want without endangering ecosystems? Ecosystems and Land Use Change responds to such questions by focusing on three areas of concern: • Multiple ecosystem responses to land use change, including: hydrologic, climatic and biogeochemical, with human health and species diversity responses • Observing, forecasting, and hindcasting land use change • Regional studies of ecosystem interactions with land use change As a starting point for future research and syntheses, this book will be of interest to hydrologists, ecologists, atmospheric scientists, geographers, land use planners, conservation biologists, and public health professionals concerned with our place on, and our use of, Earth En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1029/GM153 Ecosystems and land use change [livre] / DeFries, R.S.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Asner, G.P.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Houghton, R.A.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique . - Washington, D.C. : American Geophysical Union, 2004 . - 344 p.. - (Geophysical monograph, 153) .

Titre : Wilding: returning nature to our farm Type de document : livre Auteurs : Isabella Tree Editeur : New York : New York Review of Books (nyrb) Année de publication : 2019 Importance : 362 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-68137-371-3 Prix : 19.95 USD Note générale : Originally publ.: London : Picador, 2018; Contient 16 p. ill. coul. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Biodiversity conservation Restoration Ecology Land use Human ecology Farm area Résumé : La 4ème de couv. indique : For years Isabella Tree and her husband, Charlie Burrell, farmed Knepp Castle Estate and struggled to turn a profit. By 2000, with the farm facing bankruptcy, they decided to try something radical. They would restore Knepp’s 3,500 acres to the wild. Using herds of free-roaming animals to mimic the actions of the megafauna of the past, they hoped to bring nature back to their depleted land. But what would the neighbors say, in the manicured countryside of modern England where a blade of grass out of place is considered an affront?
In the face of considerable opposition the couple persisted with their experiment and soon witnessed an extraordinary change. New life flooded into Knepp, now a breeding hotspot for rare and threatened species like turtle doves, peregrine falcons, and purple emperor butterflies.
The fabled English nightingale sings again.
At a time of looming environmental disaster, Wilding is an inspiring story of a farm, a couple, and a community transformed. Isabella Tree’s wonderful book brings together science, natural history, a fair bit of drama, and—ultimately—hope.Note de contenu : Visite virtuelle de la ferme Knepp Estate avec cette vidéo (15 min.) sur Youtube : https://youtu.be/mP3-TsRRSys En ligne : https://www.nyrb.com/products/wilding?variant=13867544150068 Wilding: returning nature to our farm [livre] / Isabella Tree . - New York : New York Review of Books (nyrb), 2019 . - 362 p.
