Evolutionary genetics of fungi / Xu, J.(Ed.) (2005)
Titre : Evolutionary genetics of fungi Type de document : livre Auteurs : Xu, J.(Ed.) Editeur : Wymondham : Horizon Bioscience Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 350 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-904933-15-1 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 21/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Evolutionary genetics Fungi Molecular biology Résumé : Fungi play critical roles in human and animal health, in the agriculture and food industries, in biotechnology, and as model organisms for basic scientific studies. Molecular biology techniques and phylogenetic theories are currently being employed to address the reclassification of fungi, to improve the accuracy and speed of the diagnosis of fungal infections, to identify the sources of individual cases and outbreaks of infections, and to understand the patterns of genetic variation and evolutionary potentials in populations of pathogenic fungi. In this volume internationally recognised population and evolutionary geneticists describe the use of molecular techniques and bioinformatics to study the evolutionary genetics of fungi. The focus of the book is on the most recent advances and current theories in this highly topical area. Topics covered include the molecular methods currently used for typing species and strains of fungi, the selection of methods to address specific questions, molecular systematics, biogeography, population genetics, mitochondrial inheritance and evolution, drug resistance, mutations, model organisms, and much, much more. Essential reading for scientists and researchers working in mycology and a recommended reference text for all science libraries. Titre : Evolutionary genetics and environmental stress Type de document : livre Auteurs : Hoffmann, A.A., Auteur ; Parsons, P.A., Auteur Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Oxford, UK : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 1993 Importance : 284 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-854081-6 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ecological genetics Environmental aspects Evolutionary genetics Population genetics Stress Variation Résumé : Although unpredictable and of short duration, periods of extreme environmental stress have been found to occur throughout the entire course of evolution. This book concentrates on the evolutionary changes that take place during these critical periods, when populations are driven to the extreme limits of resistance. Accumulating evidence suggests that it is precisely during such moments that fundamental changes in the natural order of systems are likely, both in terms of species extinctions and bursts of evolutionary activity. This study thus offers much potential for understanding the basic forces underlying the development of life on our planet. The book is necessarily multidisciplinary in approach, with an emphasis on the interaction between ecology, genetics, physiology, and the study of behavior and development. The book concludes with a discussion of the range expansion of species, and insightful observations regarding conservation strategies under rapidly changing conditions, including those created by environmental pollution. Titre : Evolutionary theory: mathematical and conceptual foundations Type de document : livre Auteurs : Rice, S.H. Editeur : Sunderland : Sinauer Associates Année de publication : 2004 Importance : 370 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-87893-702-8 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Evolution Evolutionary genetics Résumé : Evolutionary Theory is for graduate students, researchers, and advanced undergraduates who want an understanding of the mathematical and biological reasoning that underlies evolutionary theory. The book covers all of the major theoretical approaches used to study the mechanics of evolution, including classical one- and two-locus models, diffusion theory, coalescent theory, quantitative genetics, and game theory. There are also chapters on theoretical approaches to the evolution of development and on multilevel selection theory. Each subject is illustrated by focusing on those results that have the greatest power to influence the way that we think about how evolution works. These major results are developed in detail, with many accompanying illustrations, showing exactly how they are derived and how the mathematics relates to the biological insights that they yield. In this way, the reader learns something of the actual machinery of different branches of theory while gaining a deeper understanding of the evolutionary process. Roughly half of the book focuses on gene-based models, the other half being concerned with general phenotype-based theory. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the fundamental relationships between the different branches of theory, illustrating how all of these branches are united by a few basic, universal, principles. The only mathematical background assumed is basic calculus. More advanced mathematical methods are explained, with the help of an extensive appendix, when they are needed.
