Titre : Fungi in biogeochemical cycles Type de document : livre Auteurs : Geoffrey Michael Gadd, Éditeur scientifique ; Geoffrey Michael Gadd Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Cambridge : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2006 Collection : British mycological symposium series, 24 Importance : 469 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-84579-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Biogeochemical cycles Fungi Mycorrhizal fungi Résumé : Fungi play important roles in the cycling of elements in the biosphere but are frequently neglected within microbiological and geochemical research spheres. Symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi are responsible for major transformations and redistribution of inorganic nutrients, while free-living fungi have major roles in the decomposition of organic materials, including xenobiotics. Fungi are also major biodeterioration agents of stone, wood, plaster, cement and other building materials, and are important components of rock-inhabiting microbial communities. The aim of this book is to promote further understanding of the key roles that free-living and symbiotic fungi (in mycorrhizas and lichens) play in the biogeochemical cycling of elements, the chemical and biological mechanisms that are involved, and their environmental and biotechnological significance. Where appropriate, relationships with bacteria are also discussed to highlight the dynamic interactions that can exist between these major microbial groups and their integrated function in several kinds of habitat. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-904933-15-1 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 21/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Evolutionary genetics Fungi Molecular biology Résumé : Fungi play critical roles in human and animal health, in the agriculture and food industries, in biotechnology, and as model organisms for basic scientific studies. Molecular biology techniques and phylogenetic theories are currently being employed to address the reclassification of fungi, to improve the accuracy and speed of the diagnosis of fungal infections, to identify the sources of individual cases and outbreaks of infections, and to understand the patterns of genetic variation and evolutionary potentials in populations of pathogenic fungi. In this volume internationally recognised population and evolutionary geneticists describe the use of molecular techniques and bioinformatics to study the evolutionary genetics of fungi. The focus of the book is on the most recent advances and current theories in this highly topical area. Topics covered include the molecular methods currently used for typing species and strains of fungi, the selection of methods to address specific questions, molecular systematics, biogeography, population genetics, mitochondrial inheritance and evolution, drug resistance, mutations, model organisms, and much, much more. Essential reading for scientists and researchers working in mycology and a recommended reference text for all science libraries. Titre : The fungal community: its organization and role in the ecosystem Type de document : livre Auteurs : Dighton, J.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; White, J.F.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Oudemans, P.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 3rd ed. Editeur : Boca Raton, Florida : Taylor & Francis Année de publication : 2005 Collection : Mycology series, 23 Importance : 936 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-8247-2355-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ecosystems Fungal communities Fungi Résumé : The Fungal Community: Its Organization and Role in the Ecosystem, Third Edition addresses many of the questions related to the observations, characterizations, and functional attributes of fungal assemblages and their interaction with the environment and other organisms. This edition promotes awareness of the functional methods of classification over taxonomic methods, and approaches the concept of fungal communities from an ecological perspective, rather than from a fungicentric view. It has expanded to examine issues of global and local biodiversity, the problems associated with exotic species, and the debate concerning diversity and function. The third edition also focuses on current ecological discussions - diversity and function, scaling issues, disturbance, and invasive species - from a fungal perspective. In order to address these concepts, the book examines the appropriate techniques to identify fungi, calculate their abundance, determine their associations among themselves and other organisms, and measure their individual and community function. This book explains attempts to scale these measures from the microscopic cell level through local, landscape, and ecosystem levels. The totality of the ideas, methods, and results presented by the contributing authors points to the future direction of mycology. For example, mycorrhizas increase nutrient uptake from the soil, assist in the biocontrol of pathogenic fungi and nematodes, and have a postive effect on the establishment of plant communities. Mycorrhizal associations can be found in all ecosystems and in important forest and crop species. This book provides a summary of all the mycorrhizal categories from a morphological and anatomical perspective. It is beautifully illustrated with color illustrations, photographs, and scanning electron micrographs.
