Titre : Temperature biology of animals Type de document : livre Auteurs : Andrew R. Cossins, Auteur ; K. Bowler, Auteur Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : London : Chapman and Hall Année de publication : 1987 Importance : 339 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-94-010-7906-8 Prix : 76.50 GBP Note générale : ISBN-10 : 0-412-15900-7; Softcover reprint of the hardcover 1st edition 1987; DOI:10.1007/978-94-009-3127-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Animals Body temperature Thermoregulation Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : Temperature is one facet in the mosaic of physical and biotic factors that describes the niche of an animal. Ofthe physical factors it is ecologically the most important. for it is a factor that is all-pervasive and one that. in most environments. lacks spatial or temporal constancy. Evolution has produced a wide variety of adaptive strategies and tactics to exploit or deal with this variable environmental factor. The ease with which temperature can be measured. and controlled experimentally. together with its widespread influence on the affairs of animals. has understandably led to a large. dispersed literature. In spite of this no recent book provides a comprehensive treatment of the biology of animals in relation to temperature. Our intention in writing this book was to fill that gap. We hope we have provided a modern statement with a critical synthesis of this diverse field. which will be suitable and stimulating for both advanced undergraduate and post graduate students of biology. This book is emphatically not intended as a monographical review. as thermal biology is such a diverse. developed discipline that it could not be encompassed within the confines of a book of this size. Titre : Practical field ecology Type de document : livre Auteurs : C. Philip Wheater, Auteur ; Penny A. Cook, Auteur ; James R. Bell, Auteur Mention d'édition : 2nd ed. Editeur : Hoboken, New Jersey : Wiley-Blackwell Année de publication : 2020 Importance : 424 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-119-41322-6 Prix : 60.00 USD Note générale : Voir aussi le "companion website" qui fournit d'autres ressources pour ce livre : https://bcs.wiley.com/he-bcs/Books?action=index&itemId=1119413222&bcsId=11891 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Field experimentation Methodology Plants Animals Sampling Monitoring Data processing Résumé : This book introduces experimental design and data analysis / interpretation as well as field monitoring skills for both plants and animals. Clearly structured throughout and written in a student-friendly manner, the main emphasis of the book concentrates on the techniques required to design a field based ecological survey and shows how to execute an appropriate sampling regime. The book evaluates appropriate methods, including the problems associated with various techniques and their inherent flaws (e.g. low sample sizes, large amount of field or laboratory work, high cost etc). This provides a resource base outlining details from the planning stage, into the field, guiding through sampling and finally through organism identification in the laboratory and computer based data analysis and interpretation. The text is divided into six distinct chapters. The first chapter covers planning, including health and safety together with information on a variety of statistical techniques for examining and analysing data. Following a chapter dealing with site characterisation and general aspects of species identification, subsequent chapters describe the techniques used to survey and census particular groups of organisms. The final chapter covers interpreting and presenting data and writing up the research. The emphasis here is on appropriate wording of interpretation and structure and content of the report. New in the Second Edition There are a few new areas that have developed in the 5 years since publication of the first edition (for example, in terms of some field techniques that have become more sophisticated, laboratory techniques that have now moved into the field at an appropriate cost, and some statistical techniques that are now more accessible). In addition, it would be beneficial to update websites, references, and some of the details (especially of the researchers highlighted) within the case studies. There are a few areas where additional illustrations, new case studies (and links to further references within the existing case studies), a slight expansion of some methods, and some additional explanation of more difficult concepts could help the reader.
