Titre : Niko's nature: the life of Niko Tinbergen and his science of animal behaviour Type de document : livre Auteurs : H. Kruuk Mention d'édition : 01 éd. Editeur : New York : Oxford University Press, NY Année de publication : 2003 Importance : 391 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-851558-6 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 20/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Behaviour Biographies Résumé : A charismatic naturalist, bird-watcher, teacher, artist, photographer, film-maker, and winner of the Nobel Prize, Niko Tinbergen was a prominent and influential scientist. Jointly with Konrad Lorenz, he laid the foundation for a new science, the biological study of animal behaviour. 'Ethology', and his talent for devising behaviour-testing experiments, provided an outlet for Niko's enthusiasm for gulls and sticklebacks, snow-buntings and foxes, wasps and falcons, and even children. This first full-length biography of Niko Tinbergen, lavishly illustrated with many of Niko's own drawings, describes his background in Holland, a naturalists' paradise, and the beginnings of his investigations into the behaviour of birds, fish, and insects. Hans Kruuk also explores is Niko's relationship with his colleague and co-Nobelist Konrad Lorenz. These were two men full of contrasts: Niko a charming, self-effacing field man and experimenter; Konrad a flamboyant and egocentric German, always full of new ideas. Niko's Nature goes on to follow Niko's progress in Oxford after the Second World War, where he became the world authority on the behaviour of animals in the wild: his inspiring book The Study of Instinct remains an all-time classic. As a scientist Niko will always be known for the four fundamentally different ways in which he asked the question 'why does an animal do this?' These questions, about physiology, development, evolution, and function, became known as 'Tinbergen's four whys'. But Niko's successes came at a price - severe and devastating depressions that were to plague him throughout his career. In this fascinating and engaging story, Niko's long-time friend and student Hans Kruuk argues that his impact as a scientist and naturalist was in large part due to his skills as a communicator, photographer, and film-maker. Niko's Nature is an intimate and insightful portrait of an extraordinary figure. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-62996-6 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 10/04/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Behaviour Communication between animals Evolution Motivation Social behaviour Résumé : Essentials of Animal Behaviour is an introduction to the study of animal behaviour and is primarily intended for first or second year undergraduates attending short courses in the subject. The book concentrates on putting across the basic principles as briefly and lucidly as possible with the aid of carefully selected examples from both the recent and classic literature, together with numerous illustrations. It will enthuse readers with this active and exciting area of research, and will lay a solid foundation on which further study may be based. Its simple and readable style, helped by an extensive glossary, will also make it useful to senior level school students, their teachers and those with a general interest in the subject. It will be particularly rewarding for all those needing the basics in animal behaviour, behavioural ecology and comparative psychology. Titre : Migration strategies of birds of prey in Western Palearctic Type de document : livre Auteurs : Michele Panuccio, Éditeur scientifique ; Ugo Mellone, Éditeur scientifique ; Nicolantonio Agostini, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Boca Raton, Florida : CRC Press Année de publication : 2021 Importance : 310 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-367-76543-9 Note générale : Contient 16 fig. en coul. Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Predatory birds Migration Behaviour Palaearctic region Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : "Given their roles in the ecosystem, raptors are widely considered the flagship or umbrella species among birds. Most species undertake a seasonal journey that is impressive because of the length, and the imposing natural barriers such as deserts and seas that they fly over. The migration of birds of prey has unique characteristics in the animal world because of their morphology and flight style. The flying path of Afro-Palearctic migrants between breeding and wintering grounds is determined by several factors such as morphology of the birds, geography, behavioural adaptations.
The book analyses the migration patterns of raptors along the Afro-Palearctic migratory system, and summarizes the recent research on these top predator species. Behavioural adaptations such as the importance of social interactions and the modulation of the different flight styles as well as ecological interactions with the encountered environment and weather conditions en route are described in the book. Moreover, the impact of climate change on the migratory behaviour and key conservation issues are discussed. The book provides an overview of the migratory characteristics and flyway patterns of all European raptors species and also some Asian ones. These chapters have been written by some of the most important raptor specialists, giving a complete picture of the different migration strategies on the basis of both traditional methods and new technologies."En ligne : https://www.routledge.com/Migration-Strategies-of-Birds-of-Prey-in-Western-Palea [...] Migration strategies of birds of prey in Western Palearctic [livre] / Michele Panuccio, Éditeur scientifique ; Ugo Mellone, Éditeur scientifique ; Nicolantonio Agostini, Éditeur scientifique . - 1st ed. . - Boca Raton, Florida : CRC Press, 2021 . - 310 p.

Editeur : New York : Oxford University Press, NY Année de publication : 2020 Importance : 152 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-884983-4 Prix : 53.00 GBP Note générale : DOI:10.1093/oso/9780198849834.001.0001 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Animal population Population dynamics Behaviour Résumé : La 4ème de couv. indique : This novel, transdisciplinary work explains how perturbations (defined as strong disturbances or deviations to a system) can affect the population dynamics of social animals, including ourselves.
Social responses to perturbations, especially dispersal processes, can also generate non-linear population dynamics, including the potential appearance of tipping points and critical population transitions, which can in turn lead to catastrophic shifts and collapses. The book describes the links between social behaviour (mainly the use of social information and social copying), and non-linear population dynamics at different spatial scales (local dynamics and meta-population dynamics), and their ecological and evolutionary consequences. Examples from the natural world illustrate each of the main themes (prospecting, habitat suitability, collective dispersal, and cultural evolution). Human warfare and conflict, referred to in several chapters together with quantitative and qualitative examples, is also viewed as a form of perturbation and represents a paradigmatic example of the rationale behind this book. This applicability to our own species is particularly timely, given increased interest in both ecosystem change, human migration, and the global refugee crisis.
Perturbation, Behavioural Feedbacks, and Population Dynamics in Social Animals will appeal to applied, theoretical, and evolutionary ecologists, particularly those working on the population and behavioural ecology of any social animal including humans. Its overlap with the study of complexity will also ensure its relevance and use to scientists from other disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, physics, computational science, economics, and mathematics.Note de contenu : Companion website at : https://global.oup.com/booksites/content/9780198849834/ En ligne : https://global.oup.com/academic/product/perturbation-behavioural-feedbacks-and-p [...] Perturbation, behavioural feedbacks, and population dynamics in social animals: when to leave and where to go [livre] / Daniel Oro, Auteur . - 1st ed. . - New York : Oxford University Press, NY, 2020 . - 152 p.
