Titre : Invasion biology: hypotheses and evidence Type de document : livre Auteurs : Jonathan M. Jeschke, Éditeur scientifique ; Tina Heger, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Wallingford, UK : CABI Année de publication : 2018 Collection : CABI Invasives series num. 9 Importance : 177 p. Présentation : illustrations ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-78064-764-7 Prix : 75.00 GBP Note générale : Voir aussi le "companion website" : https://hi-knowledge.org/ Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Invasion biology Research Ecology Models Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : There are many hypotheses describing the interactions involved in biological invasions, but it is largely unknown whether they are backed up by empirical evidence. This book fills that gap by developing a tool for assessing research hypotheses and applying it to twelve invasion hypotheses, using the hierarchy-of-hypotheses (HoH) approach, and mapping the connections between theory and evidence. In Part 1, an overview chapter of invasion biology is followed by an introduction to the HoH approach and short chapters by science theorists and philosophers who comment on the approach. Part 2 outlines the invasion hypotheses and their interrelationships. These include biotic resistance and island susceptibility hypotheses, disturbance hypothesis, invasional meltdown hypothesis, enemy release hypothesis, evolution of increased competitive ability and shifting defence hypotheses, tens rule, phenotypic plasticity hypothesis, Darwin's naturalization and limiting similarity hypotheses and the propagule pressure hypothesis. Part 3 provides a synthesis and suggests future directions for invasion research. Titre : The ecology and silviculture of oaks Type de document : livre Auteurs : Paul S. Johnson, Auteur ; Stephen R. Shifley, Auteur ; Robert Rogers, Auteur Mention d'édition : 2nd ed. Editeur : Wallingford, UK : CABI Année de publication : 2009 Importance : 580 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-84593-474-3 Prix : 115.00 GBP Note générale : DOI : 10.1079/9781845934743.0000 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Quercus Ecology Silviculture USA Résumé : This second edition contains ten chapters dealing with oak (Quercus)-related literature published since the first edition. Included are the relatively new subject areas of forest biomass use for fuel, the importance of carbon sequestration by forests, and how climate change is expected to affect the distribution of oaks and associated tree species. The chapters are grouped into three parts. The first part contains three chapters covering the ecological characteristics and distribution of oak species, the various kinds of oak forests in the USA and how they have been classified, and their history of human use. The second part comprises three chapters covering site productivity and stand development. An understanding of the productive capacity of oak forests is central to a broad spectrum of issues related to their management and potentialities, not only for timber but also for wildlife and other values, including carbon sequestration. The third part comprises four chapters on silvicultural methods and the growth and yield of oak forests. Editeur : Wallingford, UK : CABI Année de publication : 2000 Importance : 336 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-85199-394-2 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 10/04/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Ecology Invertebrates Résumé : The purpose of this book is to review and assess our current understanding of invertebrates in terrestrial and terrestrially-dominated (i.e. lower-order stream) ecosystems. It emphasises the centrality of the activity of invertebrates, which influence ecosystem function far out of proportion to their physical mass in a wide range of situations, particularly at the interface between land and air (litter/soil), water and land (sediments) and in tree canopies and root/soil systems. Consisting of 16 chapters by authors from the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia, the book is essential reading for ecologists and invertebrate biologists.
