Titre : Ecology and conservation of neotropical montane oak forests Type de document : livre Auteurs : Kappelle, M.(Ed.) Editeur : Berlin : Springer Année de publication : 2006 Collection : Ecological studies, 185 Importance : 483 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-540-28908-1 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé et ré-emprunté le 25/01/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Colombia Costa Rica Ecology Forest ecology Forest protection Highlands Latin America MEXICO Oak Quercus Résumé : This comprehensive synthesis systematically covers the entire range of natural and managed oak forests in the highlands of tropical America. Originally, these forests were widely distributed, but largely through human impact large parts have disappeared and the remaining patches are under increasing threat. For the first time, aspects as diverse as the paleo-ecology, biogeography, stand structure and composition, biodiversity, population dynamics, ecosystem dynamics, fragmentation and recovery, conservation and sustainable use of Neotropical montane oak forests are treated in a coherent manner. Providing a thorough understanding of ecological patterns and processes that determine the structure and functioning of these magnificent forests, this volume can serve as a sound basis for sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in general. Titre : Land-use and land-cover change: local processes and global impacts Type de document : livre Auteurs : Lambin, E.F.(Ed.) ; Geist, H.J.(Ed.) Editeur : Berlin : Springer Année de publication : 2006 Collection : Global Change - The IGBP Series Importance : 222 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-540-32201-6 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 27/05/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Global change Land cover Land use Terrestrial ecosystems Résumé : The book presents recent estimates of the rates in changes of major land classes such as forest, cropland and pasture. Among the causative mechanisms behind land change, synergetic factor combinations are found to be more common than single key factor explanations. Aggregated globally, multiple impacts of local land changes are shown to significantly affect central aspects of Earth System functioning. Innovative developments and applications in the fields of modeling and scenario construction are presented. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the most pressing implications for the design of appropriate intervention policies, and on new directions and frontiers of research. The edited book synthesizes research achievements by dozens of scientists related to the Land-Use/Cover Change (LUCC) project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). It summarizes relevant findings on global land-use change which arose from value-adding activities of the LUCC project, starting in 1995 and extending until its termination in October 2005. The main intention is to describe how human modification of land cover became a major driving force of Earth System changes over the past 300 years, a period of most rapid transformations, with fundamental implications for current landscape configurations. In writing this book, current knowledge and understanding is reported on the rates, causes/pathways, impacts, future scenarios/models, policy implications and new research directions in the field of land-use/cover change. Forecasting the ability of managed ecosystems to continue these vital roles in a globally changing environment is an inter-disciplinary challenge. To elucidate the complex responses of managed systems to elevated [CO2], several free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) facilities were established. These FACE systems allow large areas to be exposed to the elevated [CO2] we expect by the middle of the century. This volume summarizes the main findings from 13 experiments with annual crops, permanent pastures and plantation forests at 11 sites throughout the world during the past ten years. The results significantly alter our perception of how rising [CO2] will directly affect these managed ecosystems, with implications for policy, plant-breeding objectives and adaptation.
