Titre : Avian malaria parasites and other haemosporidia Type de document : livre Auteurs : Valkiunas, G. Editeur : Boca Raton, Florida : CRC Press Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 935 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-415-30097-1 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 10/04/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Avian malaria Diseases Parasites Plasmodium Taxonomy Résumé : For many years, bird blood parasites served as important models in studying human diseases, including malaria. Although these models have been largely replaced-first by the discovery of rodent malaria and then by the development of culture techniques-the wealth of avian data and research remains valuable. As ecologists and evolutionary biologists seek models to illustrate their theories, avian haemotozoa provide some of the best existing databases. Avian Malaria Parasites and Other Haemosporidia is the first illustrated guide to avian malaria parasites and their close relatives. It summarizes more than a century of research on bird haemosporidians. The first section of the book provides information on the history, classification, life cycles, ultrastructure, specificity, pathogenicity, distribution, and ecology of bird haemosporidians. It also presents a detailed analysis of the influence of the parasites on wild birds, the role of transcontinental migration of birds in the distribution of the pathogens, as well as seasonal and age peculiarities of infections of birds with haemosporidians. In the second section, the material is arranged in phylogenetical (families, genera, subgenera) and chronological (species) order. This section presents data on more than 200 species of bird haemosporidians, as well as information for each taxon such as the most important taxonomic literature, author, date of description, synonyms, and diagnosis. Also included are the vertebrate hosts, vectors, type material, place of deposition of the type material, etymology, description and illustrations for most of the species. This section also compiles keys for identification of families, genera, and species of the parasites. With a wealth of information, some from previously inaccessible Russian sources, as well as a host of references, illustrations, and tables, this book is a masterful assessment of the biology of bird haemosporidian parasites that will be useful to researchers and professionals in a wide range of biological sciences. Titre : The art of being a parasite Type de document : livre Auteurs : Combes, C. Editeur : Chicago : The University of Chicago Press Année de publication : 2005 Importance : 291 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-226-11438-5 Note générale : Inventaire 2008: Pointé en rayon le 10/04/2008 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Evolution Parasites Parasitism Parasitology Résumé : Parasites are a masterful work of evolutionary art. The tiny mite Histiostoma laboratorium, a parasite of Drosophila, launches itself, in an incredible display of evolutionary engineering, like a surface-to-air missile at a fruit fly far above its head. Gravid mussels such as Lampsilis ventricosa undulate excitedly as they release their parasitic larval offspring, conning greedy predators in search of a tasty meal into hosting the parasite. The Art of Being a Parasite is an extensive collection of these and other wonderful and weird stories that illuminate the ecology and evolution of interactions between species. Claude Combes illustrates what it means to be a parasite by considering every stage of its interactions, from invading to reproducing and leaving the host. An accessible and engaging follow-up to Combes's Parasitism, this book will be of interest to both scholars and nonspecialists in the fields of biodiversity, natural history, ecology, public health, and evolution. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-642-22871-1 Prix : 329.00 EUR Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Africa Ecology History Habitats Climate Vegetation Animal Population Parasites Diseases Résumé : In view of the rapidly changing ecology of Africa ,this work provides benchmarks for some of the major, and more neglected, aspects, with an accent on historical data to enable habitats to be seen in relation to their previous state, forming a background reference work to understanding how the ecology of Africa has been shaped by its past. Reviewing historical data wherever possible it adopts an holistic view treating man as well as animals, with accent on diseases both human and animal which have been a potent force in shaping Africa’s ecology, a role neglected in ecological studies.
