Editeur : Abingdon, Oxon : Earthscan Année de publication : 2015 Collection : Earthscan oceans Importance : 474 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-415-51703-4 Prix : 55.00 GBP Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Marine biodiversity Marine ecology Climate change Environmental impact Résumé : Biodiversity loss in terrestrial environments associated with human activities has been appreciated as a major issue for some years now. What is less well documented is the effect of such activities, including climate change, on marine biodiversity. This pioneering book is the first to address this important but neglected topic, which is likely to be the key challenge for marine scientists in the near future. Using a multidisciplinary and a holistic approach, the book reveals how climatic variability controls biodiversity at time scales ranging from synoptic meteorological events to millions of years and at spatial scales ranging from local sites to the whole ocean. It shows how global change, including anthropogenic climate change, ocean acidification and more direct human influences such as exploitation, pollution and eutrophication may alter biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and regulating and provisioning services. The author proposes a theory termed the 'macroecological theory on the arrangement of life', which explains how biodiversity is organized and how it responds to climatic variability and anthropogenic climate change. The book concludes with recommendations for further research and theoretical development to identify oceanic areas in need of observation and gaps in current scientific knowledge. Many references and comparisons with the terrestrial realm are included in all chapters to better understand the universality of the relationships between biodiversity, climate and the environment. The book will serve as a textbook for all students and researchers of marine science and environmental change, but will also be accessible to the more general reader. Titre : Seabird biodiversity and human activities Type de document : livre Auteurs : Jaime A. Ramos, Éditeur scientifique ; Leonel Pereira, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Boca Raton, Florida : CRC Press Année de publication : 2022 Collection : Aquatic sciences num. 1 Importance : 260 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-367-49827-6 Prix : 145.00 GBP Note générale : DOI:10.1201/9781003047520 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Seabirds Biodiversity Marine ecology Indicator animals Resource conservation Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : Seabirds are global travellers connecting oceans and seas all over the world, and facing multiple threats at local and global scales. Seabirds are long-lived top predators, reflecting changes at lower trophic levels, and are good models to assess ecological changes produced by human societies. Thus, world-wide collaborations are needed to understand seabird ecology and to develop effective conservation measures benefitting both humans and seabird populations.
This book provides a modern overview on seabird biodiversity studies: it begins by covering the most up-to-date techniques to study seabirds, and then focus on pragmatic issues related with interactions between seabirds and humans, the use of seabirds as ecological indicators and conservation of seabirds. It gives an updated insight on all these topics and highlights gaps that need further development for a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between seabirds and human actions.
This book covers the response of the seabird research community to a biodiversity crisis aiming to contribute towards environmental sustainability. It should provide inspiration to a wide range of professionals and students, including the much needed world-wide collaboration between research groups and practitioners. In this way seabird research and conservation provide an inspiration for the solution of global issues such as climate change.En ligne : https://www.routledge.com/Volume-1-Seabird-Biodiversity-and-Human-Activities/Ram [...] Seabird biodiversity and human activities [livre] / Jaime A.
