Domestication of plants in the Old World: the origin and spread of domesticated plants in south-west Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin / Daniel Zohary (2013)
Titre : Domestication of plants in the Old World: the origin and spread of domesticated plants in south-west Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin Type de document : livre Auteurs : Daniel Zohary, Auteur ; Maria Hopf, Auteur ; Ehud Weiss, Auteur Mention d'édition : 4th ed. Editeur : Oxford, UK : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2013 Importance : 243 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-954906-1 Note générale : Cop. 2012, Reprinted 2013; DOI:10.1093/acprof:osobl/9780199549061.001.0001; Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Plant domestication Crops History Asia Europe Mediterranean region Résumé : Le site éditeur indique : The origin of agriculture is one of the defining events of human history. Some 11,000-10,000 years ago bands of hunter-gatherers started to abandon their high-mobility lifestyles in favour of growing crops, and the creation of settled, sedentary communities. This shift into an agricultural lifestyle triggered the evolution of complex political and economic structures, and technological developments, and ultimately underpinned the rise of all the great civilisations of recent human history. This book reviews and synthesises the information on the origins and domestication of cultivated plants in the Old World, and subsequently the spread of cultivation from southwest Asia into Asia, Europe, and North Africa, from the very earliest beginnings. This book is mainly based on detailed consideration of two lines of evidence: the plant remains found at archaeological sites, and the knowledge that has accumulated about the present-day wild relatives of domesticated plants. This new edition revises and updates previous data and incorporates the most recent findings from molecular biology about the genetic relations between domesticated plants and their wild ancestors, and incorporates extensive new archaeological data about the spread of agriculture within the region. The reference list has been completely updated, as have the list of archaeological sites and the site maps. This compelling work provides thorough coverage of crop and plant molecular biology and genetics as it pertains to ferality and weeds. It then goes beyond the science of the problem to discuss the potential economic and socioeconomic impact of the problem, particularly in relationship to rice. Readers will discover a wealth of information about the overall biology and management of weeds and weedy crops, with many examples of ferality considered. Titre : Farmers' bounty: locating crop diversity in the contemporary world Type de document : livre Auteurs : Brush, S.B. Editeur : New Haven, Connecticut : Yale University Press Année de publication : 2004 Collection : Yale agrarian studies Importance : 327 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-300-10049-5 Note générale : 2 ex.; ISBN-10 : 0-300-10049-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Crops Diversification Germplasm Résumé : Biological diversity is as crucial in agriculture as it is in nature, and it is equally important to the economic health of both industrial and nonindustrial societies. This book offers a sweeping assessment of crop diversity and the potential for its preservation. Stephen B. Brush develops a framework for investigating biological diversity in agriculture that focuses on the knowledge and practice of farmers, and he shows how this human ecology perspective can be applied to three global issues that affect crop resources. Brush defines the dimensions of crop diversity and outlines the essential questions surrounding it. He describes the techniques used to maintain diversity in major crops of three cradles of agriculture in which he has worked: potatoes in the Peruvian Andes, maize in Mexico, and wheat in Turkey. Finally, he explores the policy issues surrounding genetic erosion of crop varieties, conservation of crop diversity, and ownership of genetic resources. Titre : Understanding and improving crop root function Type de document : livre Auteurs : Peter J. Gregory, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : Cambridge, UK : Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing Année de publication : 2021 Collection : Burleigh dodds series in agricultural science num. 90 Importance : 659 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-1-78676-360-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Crops Root systems Growth Stress Nutrient uptake Plant water relations Résumé : "Recent decades have seen a dramatic increase in research on plant roots. A deeper understanding of the complex ways roots interact with soils is making it possible to 'design' roots to optimise nutrient/water uptake in low-input environments as well as deliver other benefits such as improved soil health and reduced nutrient leaching. This collection summarises the wealth of current research in this important area and how it can contribute to more sustainable, 'climate-smart' crop production. Part 1 in this collection reviews recent research on understanding root system architecture and growth together key interactions in the rhizosphere. Chapters cover topics such as measurement and modelling techniques, root architecture, root growth regulators, root anatomy and nutrient acquisition. Part 2 assesses how roots respond to biotic stresses such as parasites, pathogens nematodes. Part 3 summarises what we know about root uptake of water and key nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus Part 4 explores how this understanding can be used to optimise root function. Chapters cover topics such as phenotyping to identify desirable root traits, exploiting the genetics of root traits, the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM)" En ligne : https://shop.bdspublishing.com/store/bds/detail/workgroup/3-190-89122 Understanding and improving crop root function [livre] / Peter J.
