Le climat est une fonction du Temps ; il varie ; il est sujet à des fluctuations. Météorologistes, géographes, glaciologues, géologues, etc. le savent bien qui dans leurs enquêtes, retrouvent cette évidence. Mais chez les historiens, une telle recherche restait à constituer. Comment surmonter l'absence d'informations sérielles, de relevés systématiques sur les températures et les précipitations ? Il fallait patiemment trouver une documentation climatique valable en étudiant les observations météorologiques anciennes, en regardant les dates des récoltes, en scrutant les textes, descriptions et représentations iconographiques des glaciers... Le coeur du problème était séculaire. Il fallait cerner l'objet, le contenu d'une histoire climatique séculaire.
