Titre : The ecology of plant secondary metabolites: from genes to global processes Type de document : livre Auteurs : Glenn R. Iason, Éditeur scientifique ; Dicke, Marcel (Ed.), Éditeur scientifique ; Hartley, Sue E.(Ed.), Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : New York : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2012 Collection : Ecological reviews Importance : 334 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-15712-4 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Metabolism,Secondary Plant ecology Plant metabolites Résumé : Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) such as terpenes and phenolic compounds are known to have numerous ecological roles, notably in defence against herbivores, pathogens and abiotic stresses and in interactions with competitors and mutualists. This book reviews recent developments in the field to provide a synthesis of the function, ecology and evolution of PSMs, revealing our increased awareness of their integrative role in connecting natural systems. It emphasises the multiple roles of secondary metabolites in mediating the interactions between organisms and their environment at a range of scales of ecological organisation, demonstrating how genes encoding for PSM biosynthetic enzymes can have effects from the cellular scale within individual plants all the way to global environmental processes. A range of recent methodological advances, including molecular, transgenic and metabolomic techniques, are illustrated and promising directions for future studies are identified, making this a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students in the field. Titre : Scaling biodiversity Type de document : livre Auteurs : D. Storch, Éditeur scientifique ; James H. Brown, Éditeur scientifique Mention d'édition : 1st ed. Editeur : New York : Cambridge University Press Année de publication : 2007 Collection : Ecological reviews Importance : 470 p. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-521-69937-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Biodiversity Résumé : We know that there are tens of millions of plant and animal species, but we do not know enough to be able to describe the patterns and processes that characterise the distribution of species in space, time and taxonomic groups. Given that in practical terms it is impossible to expect to be able to document biodiversity with any degree of completeness other approaches must be used. Scaling rules offer one possible framework, and this book offers a synthesis of the ways in which scaling theory can be applied to the analysis of biodiversity. Scaling Biodiversity presents new views on quantitative patterns of the biological diversity on earth and the processes responsible for them. Written by a team of leading experts in ecology who present their most recent and innovative views, readers will be provided with what is the state of art in current ecology and biodiversity science.
